Causes of Uterine Fibroids and Osteopathic Possibilities

Introduction

I have observed that many patients with hip osteoarthritis also present with uterine fibroids. Therefore, today I would like to discuss the causes of uterine fibroids and the possibilities that osteopathy can offer.

Uterine fibroids are benign tumors particularly common in women in their 30s and 40s. Many women wonder “Why do they develop?” and “Is there anything that can be done besides medication or surgery?”

From my experience as a physical therapist working with women of various ages, I consider uterine fibroids to be one manifestation of systemic dysfunction throughout the body.

Today, I will organize the main causes of uterine fibroids from a scientific perspective and discuss the approaches to enhance natural healing capacity that osteopathy can provide.

Major Causes of Uterine Fibroids

1. Hormonal Environmental Influences

Effects of Estrogen and Progesterone Uterine fibroids are tumors strongly influenced by female hormones. They tend to develop during reproductive years when estrogen secretion is active and are known to shrink after menopause.

However, hormones do not act in isolation but function as part of the body’s overall regulatory system. Hormonal balance is determined through the interaction of the autonomic nervous system, endocrine system, and immune system.

2. Genetic Predisposition and Constitutional Factors

Family History Influence When mothers or sisters have a history of fibroids, the risk of development increases. This involves not only genetic factors but also similar living environments and constitutional characteristics.

From an osteopathic perspective, skeletal structure, organ positioning, and fascial patterns may also be similar among family members, potentially affecting circulation and neurological function.

3. Persistent Chronic Inflammatory States

Changes in Pelvic Environment Recent research has focused attention on the relationship between chronic inflammation and uterine fibroids. Stagnation of blood flow and lymphatic circulation in the pelvis leads to:

  • Accumulation of waste products and tissue acidification
  • Insufficient supply of oxygen and nutrients
  • Excessive production of inflammatory cytokines
  • Abnormal proliferation of fibroblasts

These chain reactions create an environment conducive to fibroid growth.

4. Environmental Factor Influences

Exposure to Endocrine Disruptors Modern life involves daily contact with synthetic chemicals contained in plastics, pesticides, and chemical cosmetics. Some of these have estrogen-like effects and may potentially influence the endocrine system.

5. Lifestyle Habits and Body Capacity

State of Exceeding Health Capacity Our clinic’s fundamental philosophy recognizes that everyone has a “health capacity.” When various factors such as mental stress, nutrition, sleep, structural problems, lack of exercise, and environmental factors accumulate and exceed this capacity, symptoms emerge.

Uterine fibroids can be understood as one important signal from the body when this capacity is exceeded.

Osteopathic Perspective Understanding

Structure-Function Interrelationship

From the osteopathic fundamental principle that “structure and function are interrelated,” when examining uterine fibroids:

Pelvic Structural Problems

  • Sacroiliac joint mobility restrictions
  • Pubic symphysis misalignment
  • Pelvic floor muscle dysfunction
  • Lumbar-pelvic rhythm disruption

These structural problems directly affect nerve supply to pelvic organs and blood/lymphatic circulation.

Relationship with Primary Respiratory Mechanism

Craniosacral System Harmony The uterus has a close relationship with the sacrum through the uterosacral ligaments. Abnormalities in craniosacral rhythm can cause:

  • Changes in dural tension
  • Cerebrospinal fluid circulation disorders
  • Autonomic nervous system dysfunction
  • Effects on hormonal regulation centers

These may indirectly influence the uterine environment.

Comprehensive Osteopathic Treatment Approach

1. Improvement of Pelvic Circulation

Normalization of Blood Flow and Lymphatic Flow Through Structural Adjustment

Our clinic employs the following approaches:

Sacroiliac Joint Mobilization

  • Recovery of sacral nutation and counternutation
  • Improvement of physiological iliac mobility
  • Integrated functional recovery of the pelvic ring

Pubic Symphysis and Pubic Adjustment

  • Recovery of fine movements of pubic symphysis
  • Normalization of nerve supply to pelvic floor muscles
  • Circulation improvement of vesicouterine pouch

Visceral Manipulation

  • Adjustment of uterine position and mobility
  • Circulation improvement of ovaries and fallopian tubes
  • Release of peritoneal reflection adhesions

2. Autonomic Nervous System Integration

Craniosacral Approach Adjustment

Compression of Fourth Ventricle (CV4)

  • Induction of parasympathetic dominance
  • Endocrine system harmony
  • Activation of natural healing capacity

Vagus Nerve Optimization

  • Improvement of nerve mobility in cervical region
  • Normalization of diaphragmatic function

3. Integrated Myofascial Approach

Tissue Integration Through Myofascial Release

Pelvic Fascial Adjustment

  • Tension relief of round ligaments and uterosacral ligaments
  • Flexibility recovery of vesicouterine and rectouterine ligaments
  • Three-dimensional balance adjustment of pelvic fascia

Whole-Body Fascial Line Integration

  • Deep Front Line adjustment
  • Recovery of diaphragm-pelvic floor muscle coordination
  • Whole-body harmony through fascial continuity

4. Respiratory Function Optimization

Relationship Between Breathing and Pelvic Environment

From anatomical knowledge as a physical therapist, breathing function and pelvic circulation are closely related:

  • Diaphragmatic movement coordinates with pelvic floor muscles
  • Changes in intra-abdominal pressure affect venous return
  • Breathing rhythm regulates autonomic nervous activity

Specific Approaches

  • Thoracic mobility improvement
  • Diaphragmatic function recovery
  • Breathing pattern re-education

Conclusion

The osteopathic approach to uterine fibroids does not directly eliminate the tumors themselves. However, by creating a body environment where fibroids are less likely to grow, it can provide support to maximize natural healing capacity.

Our clinic offers a comprehensive approach that combines anatomical and physiological knowledge as physical therapists with osteopathic philosophy.

“The healing power lies within you”

Based on this belief, we sincerely engage with each individual’s body and help draw out their inherent capacity for health.

Before relying on medication or surgery, why not first aim for environmental improvement from within the body?

If you have any concerning symptoms, please feel free to consult with us.
